Wellness Visits Q&A

What are wellness visits?

Wellness visits, or wellness exams, are medical evaluations by board-certified professionals at Internal Medicine and Pediatrics of West Michigan. You or members of your family can attend them annually to ensure you’re in good health and get screened for illnesses, injuries, and chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart problems, and arthritis.

What happens during wellness visits?

During wellness visits, your provider weighs you and checks your pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs. They review your medical history and ask questions about the symptoms you may have. Your internal medicine specialist completes a physical examination to evaluate your eyes, ears, throat, abdomen, breathing, heartbeat, and reflexes.

In women, they complete a pelvic exam to evaluate reproductive organs or screen for signs of cervical cancer using a Pap test. They offer prostate cancer screening for men.

During child wellness exams, your provider evaluates growth and development and screens for signs of developmental delays or emotional and social problems requiring treatment.

If you’re at risk of or experience symptoms of a disease, your primary care specialist might recommend additional diagnostic testing. Examples include blood tests, urine tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs), allergy and asthma tests, X-rays, ultrasound, and other imaging procedures that can diagnose your condition or rule out medical problems.

Will I require treatment?

If you have a chronic disease, illness, or injury, your provider lets you know which treatment you may need to reduce your risk of complications and relieve symptoms. They might suggest lifestyle changes, medications, an inhaler, dietary supplements, injections, or other treatments. Internal Medicine and Pediatrics of West Michigan experts offer vaccinations and birth control.

They can refer you to specialists as needed for complex medical problems, speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, or other treatments that may benefit you or your child.

How often should I schedule wellness visits?

Schedule wellness visits for yourself or your children every year or more often if your internal medicine specialist recommends it. Babies and young children under age 3 require more frequent well-child exams.
